SmarterTabs privacy policy

Effective 3 October 2026.

SmarterTabs is a Chrome extension that groups your browser tabs. It works entirely on your device. It does not send any data to the developer or to any other party.

What the extension reads

• The address (URL) and title of your open tabs. It uses them to decide which tab group a tab belongs in.
• On every web page, a few account-menu elements, such as a link labelled with a Google Account email address. It uses them to learn which account you are signed in with.
• Optionally, if you turn on page scanning or add account detectors in the options, text or element values on pages. It only looks for the account text that you typed into your workspaces.

Email addresses and account text found this way are used only to match the workspaces you configured.

What the extension stores

• Your settings (workspaces, accounts, domains, options) are saved in Chrome local storage on your device. They do not sync through your Google account.
• Learned rules (the domains you dragged into groups) and accounts seen on open tabs are kept in Chrome session storage, which Chrome clears when you close the browser. If you turn on “Keep learned rules across browser restarts”, the learned rules are also saved in local storage.

What the extension does not do

• It does not send data over the network. It has no server, no analytics and no advertising.
• It does not sell or share data, and it does not use data for creditworthiness, lending or any purpose unrelated to grouping your tabs.
• It does not run code that it downloads.

Limited use

SmarterTabs uses the data above only to provide its single purpose: grouping your tabs. It transfers no user data to anyone. No person reads your data.

Your control

• Pause grouping at any time from the extension popup.
• Remove learned rules in the popup, or change and delete workspaces in the options.
• Uninstall the extension to delete everything it stored.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will appear at this address with a new effective date.
